Adaptation to different musical instruments, intersecting rhythms, and rendition of relatable lyrics with melodious vocals is what defines an Afrobeat song.
Oluwafemi Babatunde Raji known as Femzee is one Nigerian artiste who is fully baked into becoming a completely new generation Afrobeat artiste, making the same instrument-rich and quality Afrobeat music of global standard.
In Nigeria, even some big names in the music game have diluted Afrobeat with series of external sounds which birthed different kinds of subgenres like Afro-fusion, Afro-Jazz, Afro-Pop, Afro-Rave, and lots more.
If there is one artiste who has not deviated from the essence of Afrobeat as created by legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, that artiste is Femzee.
Although Afrobeat has grown from what it used to be in the 70s and 80s, the sound has evolved tremendously with only few artistes able to grow along.
Before launching himself into the music industry in 2018, Femzee has taken his time to study the growth of Afrobeat year-in-year-out, the Afrobeat music dieting over the years turned him into the complete professional afrobeat act that he has become today.
“When I used to listen to Fela sound from my primary school days, I could notice the changes in Afrobeat music as years go by and some other key element that makes Afrobeat, what I did was to give myself time to get acquainted with the growth of the sound and I started when I felt I was fully ready”
Femzee debut into the music industry in 2018 with a 100% Afrobeat inclined single titled “Do” which was his first official single. The song is a confessional love song with lyrics typical of an African loverboy who can do anything for love.
In 2019, the Business Administration graduate came back with a whole different Afro-beat vibe on “Angelina“. The song has a more fast-paced tempo and a more groovy rhythm which met the music demands of Nigerian music lovers that year.
Femzee featured Zlatan on a song titled “Way”
The year songs like Zanku and other dancehall tracks are gaining huge acceptance in the music industry, Femzee was not left behind in the quest to give Nigerians songs to perform legwork dance to. As a talented Afrobeat act who can adapt fluently to any kind of African vibe, Femzee came through with “Way” a song featuring the Zanku originator himself, Zlatan.
“I did “Way” at that time because I wanted my fans to enjoy the vibe that was reigning”.
At the point when Nigerian music lovers shifted to mid-tempo Afrobeat songs as obtainable nowadays, Femzee is one of the few versatile artistes in Nigeria that have comfortably adjust to the present industry demands.
In 2020, Femzee dropped two banging singles titled “Chioma” and “Try For You“, both songs feature all ingredients peculiar to today’s international standard Afrobeat vibe.
This year 2021, Femzee already blessed the industry with an inspirational sound titled “One Life“. This song preaches the fact that everyone has one life to live and encourages everyone to live it to the fullest.
Femzee’s lyrical composition on “One Life” is one you will expect from normal conscious Afro-beat music. The message is clear and the rhythm is sweet.
From 2018 till date, it is safe to say Femzee’s music career has witnessed tremendous growth and going by activities on Femzee’s Instagram page, he is just getting started with serving good music.
In this second half of the 2021 music year, the B A Digital signee, Femzee is set to release brand new music titled “Ogogoro“, he dropped a hint to the new release on his Instagram page and the few seconds snippet is sounding like a big hit already.
No doubt, Femzee is a young talented Afrobeat artiste the entire music industry should look out for. With his undiluted Afrobeat sound, Femzee has what it takes to step up with Nigerian Afrobeat exports like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Tiwa Savage, and others in the few years to come.
